Gabe Zichermann giving us an amazing talk at TEDx Kids Brussels last june. His subject was on: can playing video games make you more productive? He showed how games are making kids better problem-solvers, and will make us better at everything from driving to multi-tasking.

Do kids these days have short attention spans, or does the world just move too slow? Gabe Zichermann suggests that today's video games are making children smarter -- and we should all embrace gamification.

About the photo behind him :
"Say you're zooming down the highway, when you spot one of those speed-limit enforcement cameras from the corner of your eye. You hit the brakes, but not before the camera's flash catches you breaking the law. A speeding ticket is surely on its way to your mailbox.

Now, imagine that same camera also snaps a photo of your car when you are driving at or under the speed limit. For your safe driving, you are entered into a lottery to win a portion of the money from fines paid by speeders.

That idea was tested in Sweden with great success. It's an example of "gamification," considered the next wave of social engagement and Internet technology.

Instead of being structured around punishment and negativity, he says, the speed-camera lottery is "all about positive reinforcement." If you drive the speed limit, or under it, you may win some money.

"And that positive incentive to create better behavior," he says, "is a core tenet of games." Gamifying. NPR

TEDx Kids Brussels was about kids and The maker subculture, a contemporary subculture, representing a technology-based extension of DIY culture. Typical interests enjoyed by the maker subculture include engineering-oriented pursuits such as electronics, robotics, 3-D printing, and the use of CNC tools, as well as more traditional activities such as metalworking, woodworking, and traditional arts and crafts. On June 1, 2011 in Brussels, 48 kids went to school and got turned into MAKERS in one day.

That was the best TED conference I have been so far for many reason. Among them the interaction between the speakers and the audience. The fact that when speakers were not on stage, they spent the day with kids teaching, playing and creating with them on cool and on the edge workshops. And the playful, curious atmosphere all day long. So many cool and mind blowing talks, meeting.

Just realised I had not upload any photos from this amazing event.
And as I am preparing the bag for the giant TEDx brussels on Tuesday, going through the photos brings back great TED reveries and memories =)
Excited to the idea of the conference, the road trip, and to share it with some old and new friends
Ho and cannot wait to meet for the first time with Flickr Friend Gisela who happen to be in Europe. Should be a Mind Blowing trip. Will bring the camera to share some =)
